Man was walking in the middle of road, CHP says

A 79-year-old Madera man walking home in the 200 block of Adell Street was struck from behind by a pickup truck and killed, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Joe Jung Chan was walking eastbound on Adell Street, just east of Owens Street, about 6 p.m. Monday and was carrying a small bag of groceries when he was hit. He was struck at low speed by the right front of the pickup and was likely killed on impact, according to officers.

The driver of the pickup, 53-year-old Federico Cabral of Madera, stopped and immediately called 911.

Officers said they thought Chan may have been crossing or walking in the road to avoid large puddles and mud from recent rain on the sides of the road. No flashlight was found...
