When Patricia Perez became pregnant at 13, she thought her chances of going to college were slim.

But with support from her family — and Planned Parenthood’s Teen Success program — the single mom was able to graduate from Eastin Arcola High School and will begin studying next month at Madera Center Community College to become a registered nurse.

“I didn’t know if I was going to college but all of the girls (in the Teen Success program) talked about their goals and it gave me motivation to go to school and do good in life,” said Perez, 18.

Teen Success is a weekly group-counseling program created in 1990 to help moms ages 13 to 17 break the cycle of repeated pregnancy and interrupted education...
