Notification system now available to cell users

Madera County’s Emergency Notification System is now available to all citizens — including those who rely solely on cellphones, according to Sheriff John Anderson.

He said the improvement was necessary in order to reach the households switching from landlines to wireless-only service.

“In fact,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart, “the wireless telecommunications industry estimates that at least a quarter of American households, if not more, now rely on cellphones as their only source of communication.”

Stuart said Madera County’s Emergency Alert System, MC-Alert, is now capable of texting, calling and emailing residents and business owners during significant or catastrophic events when they occur...
