The North Fork Tribe of Mono Indians is one step closer to building an off-reservation casino near State Route 99 and Avenue 17 in northern Madera, after the California Assembly narrowly ratified the tribe’s gaming compact Thursday.
Forty-one ‘yes’ votes were required for the bill to pass, and it received exactly that. Twelve Assembly members voted ‘no’ and 26 did not vote.
The Assembly vote came months after Gov. Jerry Brown approved the tribe’s gaming compact, which would allow it to build the casino on a 305-acre parcel about 35 miles away from its tribal lands in the Sierra foothills.
