The state Senate voted 21-11 Thursday in favor of the North Fork Rancheria band of Mono Indians’ plans to build a casino in Madera County in a move that could reshape California’s gambling future.

Approval of AB277 cleared one of the final hurdles before construction can begin as early as the start of next year, a tribal spokesperson said.

Elaine Bethel-Fink, chairperson of the North Fork tribe said that the vote capped over a decade of planning.

“We are very pleased that the California State Legislature, after examining our tribe’s history and our project’s merits voted to ratify Governor Brown’s visionary Tribal-State Gaming Compact with our tribe,” Bethel-Fink said...
