Fire ruins Parkwood home

Saturday, November 21, 2009

By DJ Becker

A kitchen fire that spread into an attic destroyed a Parkwood neighborhood house Friday afternoon at the corner of Raymond Thomas Street and San Carlos Avenue.

The house was a total loss, said Battalion Fire Chief Lisa Anderson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. No injuries were reported.

The homeowner's adult son was cooking in the kitchen when a grease fire erupted, Anderson said. He put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but not before it had spread through a vent into the attic. He at first was unaware the fire had spread until he heard flames crackling in the attic.

Madera city fire engines 6 and 7 and Madera County fire engines 2 and 3 fought the fire, Anderson said.
