Friday, November 13, 2009

By DJ Becker

A Madera man in his mid-40s died Nov. 5 in an alleged alcohol-related crash a day after the Chevrolet S-10 he was riding in was struck from behind. The man's name has still not been released.

The driver of the truck that hit the Chevrolet, Orlando Silva, 22, of Madera, was arrested the day of the accident on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, and the following day he was charged with vehicular manslaughter.

The 11:15 a.m. accident on Avenue 12 and Road 25 occurred when Silva, traveling east in a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck the Chevrolet as the driver was preparing to make a turn. Witnesses estimated the speed of the Jeep to be between 80 and 100 miles per hour. Silva was ejected and received a broken forearm and minor cuts and bruises.

The CHP does not know if the death was a result of the accident.
