For a third year, the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians has given $1 million in grants to communities within Madera County.
Previous grants given by the rancheria have assisted programs and agencies including the Madera Rescue Mission, Madera Unified School District and the Good Grades for Kids Program.
This year's award winners were announced Wednesday at an awards banquet held at Chukchansi Half Dome Event Center. Native American veterans were honored during the awards banquet.
"One of our biggest awards was to the Madera Ranchos Fire Station," said Joe Alberta, tribal community representative. The fire station received two grants totaling $120,000.
