The director of the Madera County Animal Shelter said efforts in public outreach during National Animal Shelter Appreciation week, which finishes up today, is making a difference, but more education is needed.
Shelter director Kirsten Gross said pet owners should help animal shelters by making sure their pets are kept safe.
"Shelters need the public's help and support by identifying your pets with tags, a microchip or something to help us reunite animals with the owners," Gross said.
Gross also emphasized the need for pet owners to get their pets vaccinated against diseases such as parvovirus and distemper. She said a low-cost shot clinic is planned for Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
