Cal Fire: Change clocks, batteries

Saturday, October 31, 2009

By Tami Jo Nix

"Spring forward and fall back" will likely be a commonly used trick to remember which way to turn the hands of a clock when Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday at 2 a.m.

Standard Time resumes in most of North America after six month.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Office of the State Fire Marshal have issued urging the change of batteries in home smoke alarms when people change the time on their clocks.

"Cal Fire advocates the 'Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery' campaign to help families stay safe and save lives," said Cal Fire and state fire protection director Del Walters. "By taking the time to replace the battery in your smoke alarm, you can sleep better knowing that you've provided one of the best ways to alert your family should a fire occur."

When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead, he said.
