Yosemite Park fire snuffed

Thursday, September 10, 2009

By The Associated Press

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (AP) - All roads into Yosemite National Park are open now that fire crews have extinguished a fire that was burning for the last two weeks along the park's western edge.

Rangers say the blaze that began as a prescribed burn on Aug. 26 charred 11.6 square miles before reaching 100 percent containment Wednesday.

Now that Tioga Road and Big Oak Flat roads are open, visitors can access Yosemite Valley from Highway 120, but park officials say drivers should use caution since the area may still be smoky.

Several trails and campgrounds remain closed, but rangers are keeping open the Bridalveil Creek campground to accommodate extra visitors.
