Markus V. Whitherspoon, 20, was seriously injured Friday when he was ejected from a 2004 Yamaha Prohauler ATV in the area of Road 30 and Avenue 20 1/2 in Valley Lake Ranchos, according to the California Highway Patrol on Tuesday.

Whitherspoon was taken to Madera Community Hospital with major, internal head injuries.

The ATV was driven by a 17-year-old boy and was registered to Greg Weeks, of Madera.

According to statements taken by officers, several ATV's were reportedly being driven to a local store or restaurant at the time Whitherspoon was ejected out of the ATV.

Officers said numerous reports of ATV, dirt bike and quad riding and racing on the roadways have been reported in the Valley Lake Ranchos area.

CHP officer Tom Shepard said ATV's are not allowed to be driven on public highways and are not considered safe at roadway speeds.
