Progress report, overview of colleges shared in Madera

Monday, October 13, 2008

By Ramona Frances

Educational staff and college officials met at Madera Center to share progress reports of certified and non-certified colleges in North District. Madera Center, which is among a cluster of education centers, is not yet accredited.

"It is next in line to be certified after Willow International Education Center (Fresno County)," Dr. Terry Kershaw, vice chancellor of State Center Community College Center, said Friday.

Acceditiation requirements, which were discussed at Thursday's meeting at Madera Center, are based on the number of fulltime students whose classes equal 15 credits each semester. Madera Center must increase its full-time students from 600 to 1,000 to qualify for certification.

"We are on the pipeline to accreditation," Kershaw said. "We increased inrollment 18 percent from just last year; we are 60 percent there. The total number of students, including part-time enrollees, is nearly 2,700."
