Bobby McCurdy, who is waiting for a heart transplant, may be growing a little weaker each day but he still had the strength to draw the winning ticket of a quilt raffle that had been organized to raise money for his medical care.
The winner was Kathy Long, who met McCurdy when she did his echo at Dr. Ashraf's office.
Quilter Pam Sanders, who decided to help McCurdy after reading a Tribune article on him, set a goal to spend four months selling tickets as a fundraiser. Sanders was able to get a quilt top donated as a raffle prize and have it finished and stitched with hearts.
The money raised is for expenses is needed for Bobby's care after heart transplant surgery. McCurdy has been on a national transplant registry since February. When a heart becomes available he will have to stay in a hotel in San Francisco close to the hospital for six-eight weeks minimum with an approximate expense of $9,000-$10,000.
Although Sanders did well with the quilt raffle, the McCurdys are still a long way from their goal. If you would like information on how to help the McCurdys, contact Bobby or Cookie McCurdy at 664-1456.
