19th District Dems voted at middle school

Democrats of California's 19th Congressional District turned out at the Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School multi-purpose room to select delegates to vote for Sen. Hillary Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August.

Voters were asked to select one male and one female delegate and an alternate male delegate to represent the district. The delegates were selected according to a plurality of the votes cast.

Two Modesto attorneys, Betty Julian and Duane Nelson, garnered 138 and 118 votes respectively to become delegates Sunday for Clinton for the 19th District, which is comprised of Madera, Fresno, Mariposa, Tulare and Stanislaus counties.

Ian Wieland of Madera, with 58 votes, will attend the national convention as the alternate.

Other Maderans on the ballot were James A. "Lex" Bufford and Robert L. Blazer.

"If I get selected, I will vote for who I want to at the convention," said Bufford, who has run for Congress as a Democrat.

He said he was upset that the Clinton campaign has purged the members of the State Employees International Union from their list of supporters.

According to Madera Democrat Marc Scalzo, when the union endorsed the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, the Clinton camp had no choice.

"It only makes sense," Scalzo said.
