Friday, May 18, 2007

By Leon Emo

Sunday, May 20 will see motorcycle enthusiasts heading for the mountains for a poker run that will benefit the Dan Rouit Flat Track Museum.

The bike run begins at Madera Honda & Suzuki, travels through the foothills, with stops at Raymond, Coarsegold, North Fork and Prather before completing the route at the Flat Track Museum in Clovis.

The museum is a hidden jewel in a residential neighborhood in Clovis. It is filled with trophies, photos, vintage motorcycles and remarkable memorabilia. Former racer Dan Rouit, confined to a wheel chair for the past 28-years, is the museum's owner, operator and curator. It is the only museum recognized by the American Motorcyclist Association dedicated to flat track motorcycle racing. It is the oldest form of motorcycle racing. Cyclists wear a heavy boot on their left foot for balance and braking on turns. Real brakes, until recently, were optional.

The Flat Track Museum is located at 309 Rialto in Clovis. Hours are by appointment only on Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone 291-2242 for more information.

Registration for the poker run is jut $10 and begins at 9 a.m. at Madera Honda & Suzuki with the ride beginning at 10.
