There are numerous reports in the police log of Sago palms theft in Madera. Sergeant Ken Alley said that it happens particularly during new construction.

"The removal of Sago palms is a common occurrence," Alley said. "They are very hardy and very expensive - a hot ticket item. A small tree can cost as much as $200. We are always suspicious of who is selling the things. We are concerned that people are selling them, and then stealing them back, to sell them again."

Farm advisor and horticulturist Pam Geisel of Fresno said that the theft of Sago palms has been happening in Fresno, too.

"I can't explain why it's happening," she said. "It's been an on-going problem for quite sometime."

Geisel recommends using rebar, or bendable metal.

"Pound in the rebar around the base of the plant so the roots will grow and become entwined in it," she said. "That makes it really hard to pull it up."

Sago palms are popular in mild winter regions of California. According to Geisel, Sago palms are desirable because they have few pest problems after they are planted in the landscape. They are often used as a focal point in landscapes. They are not difficult to grow, but their slow growth rate, usually one flush of new growth per year, makes a large specimen quite valuable.

Curt Peters, part owner of Peters Brothers Nursery, says he chains Sagos to a metal 2 by 4 stake and buries the stake under the ground.
