CHOWCHILLA - A San Jose man died Saturday after his race car collided with another vehicle during the Chowchilla Speedway races.
The collision occurred shortly before 11 p.m. during the final event of the evening, the Figure 8. Chowchilla police said no one mishandled the vehicles, and no malfunction occurred that resulted in the death of Brian Davis, 36.
Despite the fact Davis was wearing his harness and helmet, he suffered massive head injuries, according to police, and died at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle was not identified. He received minor injuries to his neck and ankle, police said, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
This is the first fatality at the Chowchilla Speedway.
Davis, a native of Nashville Tennessee, had been racing four years, two years in the Figure 8 competition. He was named Rookie of the Year in the Watsonville and Chowchilla Figure 8 competitions, and placed second in Chowchilla Figure 8 points in 2002.
