The new board president of Madera Unified School District has given every indication that it will not be business as usual when trustees meet in public sessions in the future.

An updated governance manual and a determination by Ricardo Arredondo to streamline the way the board conducts its business in public has resulted in less “bird walking” during discussions by board members and fewer interruptions from the audience.

The new modus operandi is in sharp contrast with that of former board president Robert Garibay, who allowed the public considerable opportunity for input, which resulted in longer meetings.

The new direction first surfaced at the board’s meeting Tuesday evening during the public hearing for visitors who wish to speak on a subject not on the board agenda...
