New restaurant opens on Yosemite Avenue

Downtown’s newest family-owned eatery opened on Friday with less-than-a-dollar food specials that are set to last a month.

Cancun, which specializes in tacos as well as a variety of Mexican foods, was opened by the Alvarado family, who’ve been living in Madera for a decade.

Owners Jose and Lorena Alvarado are natives of Tampico, a port city in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas in Mexico. Lorena grew up in the beach town of Ciudad Madero, which is governed by the municipality of Tampico. She loves the seaside and wanted the business she helped found to reflect that. Although the coastal towns in the family’s native state draw tourism annually, she didn’t think their names would be as catchy as Cancun, a world-renowned tourist destination in the southeastern tip of Mexico.

Neighboring business owners and Madera’s mayor were quick to welcome the family and their two employees at 131 E. Yosemite Ave. Tony Camarena, owner of Rincon Norteño wiring and income tax service a couple of doors down, walked over with a balloon arrangement.
