Mayor Robert Poythress, Mayor Pro Tem Donald Holley and City Councilmen Andrew Medellen and Derek Robinson were sworn into office Wednesday night during a historic city council meeting.

Poythress is the city’s first separately elected mayor, an at-large position. He was mayor twice while he was on the council under the at-large system.

Holley, Robinson and Medellin each represent separate districts, the first time elections have been held by district in Madera under a new system adopted two years ago.

Medellin was appointed to serve out the term of the late Councilman Sam Armentrout, who died in May of 2011, and was elected on his own this year...
