The Madera Police Department’s newest member didn’t take long to make his first bust.

In only his second day on the job with MPD’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Wednesday, 2-year-old German Shepherd Ollie sniffed out methamphetamine inside a car near Gary Lane and State Route 145, which resulted in an arrest.

“I’d say that’s a good way to start off the new year,” said investigator Jerry Smith, Ollie’s handler and partner of sorts. “I’d like to think it’s his enthusiasm paying off.”

Flown into the United States about a year ago from Chile, Ollie spent months in training with Heritage K9 of Fresno — which trains dogs for police departments across the state — before he came to the Madera Police Department late last year...
