MUSD honors Hispanic Heritage winners

Three students from Desmond Middle School’s art class made a clean sweep of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Poster contest, put on by the Association of Mexican American Educators (AMAE) of Madera. Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

Gabriela Ruiz landed the top prize of $150 for 1st place, while Janel Zuniga received a $100 check for 2nd, and Carmen Hernandez won a $50 prize for 3rd.

According to Alex Garcia, president of AMAE, this is the first time all of the winners came from one school. The contest was open district wide.

The poster winners were introduced to MUSD trustees at their meeting Sept. 19 by Garcia, and for a few minutes they achieved rock star status as cameras flashed and members of the audience flocked around the students, offering congratulations.
