One local high school band is making a name for itself statewide, recently earning a finalist title and today heading to Oakland to participate in a nationally televised invitation-only parade.
The Madera South High School band was named a 2013 Western Band Association Class AA State finalist on Nov. 23, placing fourth overall in the WBA championships at Central and Buchanan high schools. Bands are classified in three categories, depending on their size. There’s A for smaller bands, AA for medium-sized bands and larger bands are AAA.
Only the top five in each class qualify to compete against other bands in their respective classes from throughout the state. Madera South High School’s band beat Clovis East High School’s band, which placed fifth in the AA class.
