Motorist pleads no contest in death of 3-year-old

Almost two years after a Madera toddler died from being hit by an SUV, the woman accused of crashing into him and then driving away changed her plea from not guilty to no contest.

Ivette Godinez, 35, pleaded no contest Friday to felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence for the Sept. 21, 2010 incident that killed 3-year-old Efrain Hernandez.

Hernandez was crossing Olive Avenue near Martin Street in a crosswalk with an adult relative and his young siblings when Godinez struck him with her SUV. Witnesses say she made a U-turn and came back, but then sped away when she realized she had hit the boy.

Based on the plea, Judge Ernie LiCalsi found Godinez guilty and scheduled her sentencing for Oct. 15. Godinez has been free on bond since shortly after the 2010 incident...
