A 39-year-old Madera man is in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center Wednesday, after his motorcycle struck an SUV slowing for heavy traffic on northbound State Route 99, just south of McKinley Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Speed may have been a factor in the collision, the CHP said.

The man has been identified by family and friends as Walter Short, a longtime employee of the Madera District Fairgrounds. Distraught family members said Short is on life support and they had been told he would not likely survive his injuries.

Short was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Fresno Tuesday night about 6 p.m. He was northbound on SR 99 in heavy traffic, south of McKinley Avenue, when he struck the back of an SUV slowing for traffic ahead of him. He was thrown from his motorcycle and landed on the pavement.
