Family and friends gathered to honor Gregoria Rios, who was selected as Mother of the Year during the 11th annual Mothers’ Day Tea event organized by Latinas Unidas. It is an event the honoree could easily have missed however.

The mother of Lomeli and Joaquin Rios battled a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 2012.

“After being transported to Fresno, airlifted to Sacramento, 22 hours of brain surgery, three weeks in the hospital, two additional cranioplasties and a six-month recovery, I’m pleased to say my mother is as good as new and maybe even better,” said daughter Lomeli, who nominated her for the recognition.

“She continues to be Mary Kay director. She is back to babysitting her grandkids and spoiling them rotten every chance she gets. She has even started volunteering at my children’s elementary school again on Thursdays. She is back to driving and has made herself available to my brother and I like nothing ever happened.”...
