Margaret Medellin sat with her son, daughter and relatives, ready to eat brunch. She looked around in an annual gathering of mostly women, trying to figure out who would be presented with the Mother of the Year award. Then Latinas Unidas dropped the bombshell: the Mother of the Year was Medellin.
“I was totally shocked. I feel honored. It’s always special when you’re being honored by people who you grew up with. All your friends, people who you’ve known for a long time,” she said.
The former councilwoman and first ever Hispanic female mayor of any city in California was bestowed with the honor for her contributions to the community and for being an exemplary mother to her four children, said Latinas Unidas president Dolores Olmos-Rodriguez.
