An 18-month-old girl was backed over and killed by the family SUV, driven by her mother, in their driveway about 11:30 Wednesday morning in the 26000 block of Martin Street, near Road 26, according to The California Highway Patrol. The Madera County Sheriff’s Department identified the child as Merlyn Cruz Hernandez.

CHP public information officer Mark Cosentino said the family was getting ready to go shopping.

“The mother was moving the family SUV, a white Ford Expedition, out of the carport,” Cosentino said, “preparing to load the family, when she accidentally backed over her 18- month-old daughter in the process. They were preparing to go to the store. The mother thought the baby was still in the house with other family members. The (toddler) was fully dressed. She had on a beanie hat and little pink shoes."
