Two men were behind bars Wednesday on felony child cruelty charges related to the death of a 17-year-old girl after search and rescue teams found her body submerged in a stream about an hour north of North Fork, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

Scott Jacob Mason, 20, of Simi Valley and 18-year-old Jacob Patrick Banaga of Visalia were reportedly on a multi-day methamphetamine binge before the body of Tara Shannon Maguire, also from Simi Valley, was discovered.

Her body was found late Monday night near Rock Creek Campground in the Sierra National Forest at about 5,000-foot elevation, Stuart said.

Stuart said the sheriff’s office received a phone call from a stranded driver shortly after noon on Monday...
