Fortunately for Madera, Jan Zitek’s initial impression of Lyle Zitek in 1967 wouldn’t keep the two from starting a happy, lasting marriage one year later.

Since 1982 when they came to Madera, purchased the Madera Animal Hospital, and ran it for 25 years, the Ziteks have been a community-service powerhouse and a duo whose humor is matched only by their work ethic.

For their efforts — their volunteer work outside the hospital includes dozens of local organizations and programs — the Ziteks earned a 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Madera Chamber of Commerce...
