Marine spends birthday in Afghanistan, expects to return home in September

A 2003 Madera High grad who celebrated his 27th birthday in Afghanistan on Monday is scheduled to return home from his third combat deployment in September.

Marine Corps Sgt. Mark Basares, a motor transport operator, is stationed at Camp Pendleton but plans to spend his entire post-deployment leave in Madera, said his wife, Maria Basares.

“He has been to Iraq twice and this is his first time in Afghanistan,” she said. “I have never been one to acknowledge our military members but after experiencing the toll it takes on a person and their family I have come to appreciate their sacrifices.”

The couple has five children: Jonas, 6, Layla, 4, Rowland, 3, Gavin, 2, and Mark Jr., who is just 9 months...
