Many tie the knot on Valentine’s Day in county clerk’s office

Staff at the Madera County Government Center was all smiles as couple after couple arrived throughout the day to marry on Valentine’s Day. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. the ceremonies continued every half-hour. In total, 15 marriages were performed.

A special room for the ceremony was provided for the bride and groom. Each couple stood under a flower-adorned white arch in front of an ornate podium for the Justice of the Peace. Chairs were provided for family members and guests.

One of the first to become a married couple, Leon Barunda and his new wife, the former Frances Williams, were surrounded by family and friends as they left. They first met seven months ago while Leon was working at Chukchansi Casino in Coarsegold. They plan to honeymoon in San Francisco.

Later, it was the same for newlyweds Michael and Carol Brickman. “It is such a romantic day and time to commit to each other and we’re very happy,” said the new Mrs. Brickman. They had been dating each other for 15 years before choosing this Valentine’s Day to say their vows...
