Man, walking on freeway, is struck and killed

An unidentified adult Hispanic man walked into the northbound lanes of State Route 99 justsouth of Avenue 12, was struck by at least two vehicles and killed at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatality occurred about 9:30 Saturday night. Anyone with additional information on the incident or on the identity of the man is asked to call the Madera CHP office at 675- 1025.

CHP Sgt. John Johnson said it was unknown what the man was doing out on State Route 99, and he may have walked onto the freeway fromAvenue 12, or gotten out of a north- or a southbound vehicle. Officers were checking with local businesses who might have surveillance cameras.

Johnson said the man, who was dressed in dark, casual clothing, had no identification, few personal belongings and may have been between 30 and 40 years old...
