Man tells police he was carjacked at gunpoint after car found wrecked

A 19-year-old San Jose man told police he was carjacked at gunpoint early Sunday while he sat with a friend at Rotary Park after a sports car he borrowed was wrecked a few miles away. No injuries were reported.

According to police, the alleged carjacking was not reported to police promptly — the timeline of 911 calls from the driver and other witnesses doesn’t add up — and they doubt the man’s story. The man’s name has not been released, and he has not been charged in the incident.

Officers say, however, that the 19-year-old is a suspect in the incident and may have made up the carjacking story to avoid an arrest for drinking and driving.

The man declined to give his name but said he was visiting family in Madera for the weekend and had borrowed his cousin’s metallic blue, 2001 Ford Mustang convertible sometime earlier in the evening...
