A motorcyclist sustained major injuries Friday night on southbound State Route 99, near Avenue 18 1/2, after being struck by a pickup about 7:15 p.m., according to The California Highway Patrol.
Witnesses told officers the motorcyclist slowed for traffic when he was struck from behind by a dark-colored pickup truck and went flying. The victim landed in the center divide, as other vehicles skidded and stopped. The heavy traffic ground to a standstill in all southbound lanes, officers said. Northbound traffic was also snarled as motorists slowed.
The motorcyclist was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, officers said.
Secondary collisions, all involving multiple vehicles, happened within about 30 minutes of the first crash. Those drivers sustained minor injuries, and several people were taken to Madera Community Hospital with complaints of pain...
