Man on overpass halts traffic

A distraught 22-year-old Madera man brought all traffic on State Route 99 to a standstill when he climbed over a pedestrian barrier on Yosemite Avenue and then clung precariously to fencing over the busy interstate.

Witnesses said they called police Saturday night shortly before 7 p.m. when they saw the man approach and make several attempts to get over the tightly woven, no-climb barrier, make it to the top and then almost slip and fall over the specially designed fencing, into the moving traffic below.

The man then haltingly moved back and forth on the edge of the overpass above all four lanes of traffic, before settling on a wider maintenance ledge next to the Cleveland Avenue exit sign.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol stopped all north and southbound traffic on the busy interstate highway, and cleared several hundred yards of space under the overpass in all directions, for fire and emergency crews to deploy their rescue, ladder and other equipment...
