Local appliance merchants beware, authorities say, because a large-scale fraud ring that has invaded several Central Valley cities made its first appearance in Madera earlier this month.

Sean Hardy, 32, was arrested by the Madera Police Department late last week for his alleged attempt to defraud Massetti Brothers Inc. out of thousands of dollars in appliances in early July.

Police said an accomplice during the crime, Jalisa Stevens, was not arrested because of her residence in Tulare and potential complications from her five children living with her, though charges were filed on her criminal record.

Authorities described Hardy — who has a long criminal record involving fraud — as a minor player in what appears to be a massive scamming ring that may have originated in Sacramento and has since moved into cities throughout the state...
