A Madera man who died in a crash Monday on Road 18 1/2 and Avenue 22 in Dairyland has been identified.

Elfrego Cuellar-Lopez, 44, was driving northbound on Road 18 1/2 when he lost control of his car and hit two large trees, Madera County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.

California Highway Patrol officers estimated that Cuellar-Lopez was driving more than 70 mph and are investigating alcohol as a factor in the crash.

An open container of beer was found near the man wedged into the debris of the car. He was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected.
