Man charged in death of another in a fight

Madera police have arrested 41-year-old Johnny Warren of Madera for murder in connection with the death of Paul Carranza, 58, also of Madera.

The two men reportedly argued in a parking lot near BJ’s Liquor Store at 4th Street and Gateway Drive on the morning of July 16, when Warren struck Carranza causing him to fall and hit his head. Carranza was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he died the next day.

Sgt Dino Lawson said the men were both homeless and knew each other. Both men had prior minor contacts with law enforcement, and no known gang affiliations he said. Carranza also appeared to be in poor health, likely from chronic alcohol use, according to Lawson.

“They were friends. The suspect (Warren) said they had both been drinking in the park earlier in the day. They saw each other again later that night and there was a disagreement, possibly over a debt. Warren struck Carranza once in the mouth with his closed fist, and he fell to the concrete and hit his head. It was not an attack or a beating, but Warren then fled the scene,” Lawson said...
