Man arrested after punching deputy, authorities say

Two Nevada men traveling through Madera were arrested Tuesday after one of them punched a Madera County Sheriff’s deputy in the face, according to authorities.

Justin Oppenheim, of Elko, Nev., was arrested on charges of assaulting a peace officer. A 22-year-old man who was with him, William Corgan of Elko, Nev., was booked for providing false identification.

Shortly after 10 a.m., deputies received a tip from an almond grower regarding suspicious activity near his orchard. Deputies were advised that a small red car was trespassing on property on Road 23 near Avenue 16.

Both men were there when deputies arrived and were taken into custody, but not before Oppenheim, who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance, punched the deputy, sheriff’s spokeswoman Erica Stuart said...
