Maderan playing lead role in Playhouse Merced’s ‘Parade’

A Madera resident will play the lead role of Leo Frank in Playhouse Merced’s upcoming musical production “Parade,” which opens today for a three-week run.

“Parade,” based on a true story, dramatizes the historic trial of Leo Frank, who in 1913 was accused and convicted of murdering his young employee. The horrific crime set off one of America’s first media-frenzied court cases.

Sides are quickly taken and issues of bigotry, prejudice and hatred come to the forefront. With music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (“The Last Five Years,” “Songs for a New World”), “Parade” opened on Broadway in 1998 and won a Tony award for Best Original Score.

Guthier was in Playhouse Merced’s production of “MID-LIFE: The Crisis Musical” last season. Prior to that, he directed and starred as The Baker in “Into The Woods.”...
