Maderan honored for showmanship

Nicole Rider of Madera has won the Junior Market Showmanship award with her Hampshire lamb, Hannah, at the California State Fair, which ends Sunday in Sacramento.

Her award came after nearly a week of competition between about 100 contestants throughout California. Nicole, the daughter of Lisa and Jason Rider, was coached by her father and by Skottlynn Snyder, who herself has received multiple showmanship awards.

“We were very overjoyed,” said Lisa. In the past, Nicole had participated in local fairs without receiving such recognition. “For it to be her first time winning and be at a state fair was intense and exciting.”

“You hate to be surprised (by success) when you’ve put a lot of work into something,” said family friend Corky Napier, who has kept Nicole’s livestock on his property for some of the past several years. “But there’s always surprise no matter how much time you’ve put in.” ...
