Madera youths serving community with the Leo Club

In less than a decade, Madera youth have carved a legacy locally and year after year continue the charitable practices of their predecessors.

The Leo Club is a branch of the Madera Evening Lions and its mission is to provide opportunities for youth to serve the community, gain experience and make connections to help members succeed and go to college, said Ruth Nishimoto, one of four Leo advisors.

“These members volunteer their time to help the community,” Nishimoto said. “Empowering these youth to feel confident enough to be able to reach out to others helps them become productive adults. Through the importance of community service we are obtaining positive outcomes through giving back to others.”

Nishimoto, along with Alicia Gonzalez, Chris Hansen and Rose Cantu, mentor 50 students currently enrolled. Membership in the club is limited to 50 people and members are installed based on referrals from current members, Cantu said...
