Madera Youth Center offers winter break options for children of working parents

Children enrolled in Madera Unified School District won’t return to school until Jan. 9. Winter break leaves working parents with few options— letting their kids stay home alone, leaving them under the care of relatives or friends, or paying for day care.

For parents of school-aged children, the John W. Wells Youth Center provides another option: the third session of Winter Kids Camp at the youth center will begin Tuesday. (Monday is a holiday.)

For just $10 a day, kids in kindergarten through ninth grade are provided with snacks, taken on field trips, and take part in a craft project.

“The program that we offer is a really good opportunity for parents because there are healthy options for snack time and instead of having them at home by themselves, we keep them entertained and interactive,” said Christine Rolan, recreation and community programs coordinator with the City of Madera Parks and Community Services Department...
