The Madera Rotary Club will help provide 200 wheelchairs for needy handicapped people in the cities of Somoto and Matagalpa in Nicaragua.

Six other area Rotary clubs are participants in this humanitarian effort along with the Somoto Rotary Club, the Rotary Foundation, Hearts Afire Foundation and Hope Haven International. The wheelchairs will give recipients mobility to help them lead more productive lives.

Nicaragua is economically depressed and is not always able to provide all the orthopedic supplies and medicines its people need. Rotary works with health workers there to identify those who will most benefit from the wheelchairs. It is Rotary’s belief that humanitarian projects help build world peace.

Madera Rotary members Dick and Marty Wyatt are flying to Nicaragua on Jan. 24 to help with the distribution. Marty will use her occupational therapy skills to adjust chairs to fit patients. Dick will help with interpretation.
