Before he claimed victory in the male group of this week’s Santa Rosa Marathon, local track star Benny Madrigal did something a little bit different to prepare.
“Normally I don’t bike 100 miles before marathons,” Madrigal said with a smile. “But I’m training for the Ironman so I did a 100-mile ride on Saturday and the marathon Sunday.”
As if that weren’t enough Madrigal, 27, also swam at least four days of the week before the race as the Ironman Lake Tahoe, Madrigal’s first triathlon, will have a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a standard 26.2-mile marathon run all in a row on Sept. 22.
“I was trying to get myself to perform tired, if that makes sense,” Madrigal said. “It was a tough week but these Ironman events are made to be tough and I want to be ready.” ...
