Madera deputies run in 120-mile race

Three Madera County Sheriff’s deputies placed 10th out of 52 teams in their division at the 28th Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay Race.

Detectives Bennie Romiti and Zack Zamudio and Deputy Darrell Swengel went to Baker this past weekend and represented a team of 24 runners handpicked from the Central Valley.

In their 120-mile race, Romiti, Zamudio and Swengel clocked more than 20 miles — each assigned to a different leg — finishing in 17 hours, 10 minutes and 17 seconds to place 93rd out of more than 300 teams overall.

No sooner had they returned to Madera than they had to suit up to take part in a federally organized SWAT training operation, said sheriff’s department spokeswoman Erica Stuart...
