Two Dairyland Elementary School students garnered first place honors for their submissions in the California-Hawaii Elks Association State Drug Awareness Program essay and poster contest.
Seventh grade students Ryan Selby and Jocelyne Ramirez took first place in the boys and girls divisions.
The winners were presented with awards at the Madera Elks Lodge officer installation and dinner Friday evening. Selby and Ramirez, in addition to certificates, were each awarded $500 first place checks.
Ramirez was not able to attend the ceremony. However, Selby broke down emotionally several times while reading his essay to the audience. His writing included personal feelings about drug problems and what it can do to families...
