Madera community hopes to continue get-togethers after weekend block party

Three neighbors who wanted to get to know each other and those around them better reached a milestone in their quest for a more close-knit community.

About 45 residents of West Park Drive turned out for a neighborhood block party organized by Bonnie Day, Marissa Howard and Lisa Williams on Saturday. The City of Madera blocked off the street from Shannon to North Schnoor avenues for the evening gathering.

Councilman Gary Svanda and Mayor Pro Tem Andrew Medellin took part in the activities, which included dancing led by Michelle’s School of Dance, games and food. A fire truck was on display and neighbors provided food and desserts. Families played ping pong and bean bag toss.

The idea of a neighborhood block party came about after Day, Howard and Williams successfully put on a progressive dinner earlier this year. At the dinner, six families signed up to serve one dish in their homes and neighbors visited each home successively to eat...
